Meitzler is the owner, operator and Chef de Cuisine for Café 61,
Memphis’ best hotspot for cool atmosphere and amazing food on the
downtown scene. With no formal training and using his customers as a
sounding board, Derk made a name for himself as a premier chef in Memphis
with 61 On Teur in Midtown. This tiny place off the beaten path became
an 8-time Memphis Magazine award-winning restaurant with Derk running
the show. As Derk’s reputation grew for creating fun, funky creole
accented cuisine grew, so did Derk’s appetite to give the city
of Memphis something bigger. Derk opened Café 61 in September
of 2003 to great anticipation, and the reputation for food and service
has in a short time grown Café 61 into a downtown Memphis institution.
Derk’s unique dishes have developed into his own trademark Creole Global Fusion Cuisine. His signature dishes such as The King Creole Chop with Crawfish Mac and Cheese Deluxe, Derk’s Favorite Shrimp with sweet potato grits and the Duck and Waffles with a blueberry-hoisin reduction keep customers coming back for more. Café 61 has been so popular that Derk has expanded the business recently to include all aspects of catering. Derk even offers his talents to those who want the meal of a lifetime served to guests in their home!
Derk welcomes everyone, both regular customers and new ones, to come and have a great experience at Café 61.
